The Holy Innocents

Painting representing the Holy innocentsGet up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him. - Matthew 2:13

The Holy Innocents are considered the first martyrs of the Church. Herod had long been fearful of any threat to his throne and was par-ticularly obsessed with the prophecy of the Messiah. Herod cunningly asked the Wise Men from the East to report back to him after they paid homage to the newborn King so that he could go visit and pay homage. But the Wise Men were warned by an Angel to not return to Herod. Furious, Herod ordered the massacre of all boys under the age of two in Bethlehem and neighboring towns. Luckily, Joseph was warned in a dream and able to escape with Mary and Jesus safely in tow but unfortunately, many children were slaughtered. December 28th is the feast day of the Holy Innocents, the children lost.
