St. Rose of Lima

St. Rose of Lima drawingSaint Rose of Lima (1586-1617)

When we serve the poor and the sick we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors, because in them we serve Jesus.
-Saint Rose of Lima

St. Rose of Lima was a great beauty. Born to Spanish colonists in Peru she had many suitors and was expected to marry. From a young age Rose dreamed of becoming a nun. To deter suitors she would rub pepper on her face to cause disfiguring blisters. Her parents refused to let her enter a convent so Rose lived her life of penance in solitude as a Third Order Dominican. Saint Rose was known for her devout prayer life and penance. She gave up meat and would wear a silver crown with spikes to pierce her flesh and remind her of the Crown of Thorns. Towards the end of her life Rose set up a room in the house where she cared for the homeless, the elderly and the sick.

Saint Rose of Lima is the patron saint of Latin America and her feast day is August 23rd.
