St Anthony Mary Claret

Saint Anthony ClaretAn apostolic missionary must have a both heart and tongue ablaze with charity.
-Saint Anthony Mary Claret

St. Antony Mary Claret was the fifth of eleven children. It was during his childhood learning the family trade in of weaving in Barcelona that St. Anthony decided to pursue a religious vocation. After the seminary, An-thony was assigned as the new head of the archdiocese of Santiago, Cuba. St. Anthony began ceaselessly preaching, hearing confessions, and expressing strong anti-oppression opinions in his new archdiocese. He also worked to update farming methods and credit unions. St. Antho-ny felt that it was important for people to own their own farms and pro-duce a wide variety of foods to support themselves, rather than just pro-ducing sugar, Cuba’s main export. He also built hospitals and schools, visited the jails, and spoke out against slavery and racism. St. Anthony made many enemies by speaking out against slavery, in fact, fifteen dif-ferent times people tried to assassinate him for this belief. Anthony was a very popular preacher in Spain prior to leaving for Cuba and after eight years in his archdiocese, the Queen of Spain asked Anthony to return to Spain. He complied and started a religious publishing house and wrote a multitude of books and pamphlets. St. Anthony Mary Claret’s feast day is October 24 and he is the patron saint of weavers.
