Language Arts: Recognizing that reading is a cornerstone for future success in all areas of life, our staff is committed to developing competent readers who have a love of reading. Early intervention in the primary grades allows us to offer additional support at a time when it is most critical. We have two reading resource teachers and a mentoring program called Sound Partners that provides one-on-one tutoring for struggling readers. In third through fifth grades, book reports, which develop the skill of synthesis, are an important part of the curriculum. In the upper grades, students form literature circles where they explore different genres, gain an appreciation of a variety of writing styles, and learn to reflect on and discuss their views about what they have read.
In writing, students advance from writing simple sentences to doing concise research papers. Our students consistently rank at the top of students taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning.
