Lenten Soup Suppers

The Soup Suppers served at St. Francis of Assisi Parish during Lent are hosted by the various ministries and organizations operating here at the church.  Request for volunteer hosts generally go out 4-6 weeks prior to Lent.  Sign up is on a first come first serve basis, with the first Friday of Lent being reserved for the very popular Boy Scout Fish Dinner.

What is involved in hosting a soup supper?

Hosts will arrive early to prepare and/or heat the soup servings, set up place settings in Unity Place, serve the meal and clean up afterwards.  Soup dinners are served from 5:30 - 6:30 pm followed by Stations of the Cross beginning at 7:00 pm in the church.

In earlier days, parishioners were asked to bring their own bowls and spoons, and so you might notice some people doing that.  We have ceramic bowls and metal silverware readily available to use.

Details

  • The meal consists of two choices of soup (vegeterian or seafood), bread or rolls and beverages. *Abstinence from meat applies to healthy adults ages 14 years and over.
  • A good variety of meatless recipes are available from the Parish Outreach Office if you wish to consider making soup from scratch.
  • Donations are accepted to cover the cost of ingredients, with the remainder going to Operation Rice Bowl.  Save your ingredient receipts for reimbursement.
  • When heating soup, use the double boiler method.  This prevents scorching and will save quite a bit of time on clean up.
  • If serving full flavored prepared soup, allow at least one hour to heat to serving temperature.  Cooking times will vary if preparing soup from scratch.  The kitchen can be available for preparing soups on Friday afternoon, or on Thursday p.m. if you request that.
  • Coffee and tea are available from the Parish. The Tullys coffee maker in the kitchen can brew the coffee in about 20 minutes.
  • There are Rice Bowl placemats and paper napkins available for use in place settings.
  • Bring empty storage containers in preparation for any leftover soup.

Quantities

  • Expect around 60 - 80 guests.
  • 8 - 10 gallons of soup.  (Approx. 3 Bags each of frozen prepared soups)
  • 8 dozen rolls

Church will Supply

  • A jar of Peanut Butter and Jelly each.
