Prayer from Sojourners - We pray for those in the Gulf of Mexico who are trying to stop the oil leak and curb the devastation; may Your hand bless their efforts. We pray for those whose livelihoods have been damaged; may Your peace guard their hearts. We pray for Your creation, which we have sullied; restore it, Lord. Forgive us our sins, our irresponsibilities, and stir us by your Spirit to better stewardship. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Stewards of Money: “In truth, all human beings are called to be saints, but that just means called to be fully human, to be perfect-that is, whole, mature, fulfilled. The saints are simply those men and women who relish the event of life as a gift and who realize that the only way to honor such a gift is to give it away.” William Stringfellow
The Current Parish Bulletin:
This Week's Note from Fr. Dick
August 1, 2010
I cannot tell you how great my vacation was since I am writing this before I leave. So I just hope that I had a wonderful time and that my team won the golf tournament. (I can hope, can’t I?) I hope that you are having a great time this summer. While the weather seems to keep changing, we seem to be enjoying some good summer days. As you read this, we begin the month of August. Can you imagine that school will begin in about a month? Where does the time go?
People who ask that question, (Where does the time go?), are people who usually are having a good time. They have few worries or problems. They are not struggling to survive. They are not sick or in pain. If you are in this category of people, it is good to remind yourself to be thankful to a good and gracious God who has blessed you.
People who have to grind through every day because of the difficulties of their lives, wonder why time goes by so slowly. They are not able to sail through the day. Every moment lies heavily on their shoulders and their days are long. We need to remember them in our prayers and ask God to lift their burdens. There are people in our lives and in our world who suffer greatly and are supported by family and by their Faith in God. Others struggle each day because there is no family or Faith. May God be merciful and grant these people the help they need and a heart comforted with Love.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER
Loving God, I come to you in thanksgiving, knowing that all I am and all that I have is gift from you. In faith and love, help me to do your will. I am listening, Lord God. Speak your words into the depth of my soul, that I may hear you clearly. I offer to you this day all the facets of my life, whether it be at home, at work, or at school --to be patient, to be merciful, to be generous, to be holy. Give me the wisdom and insight
to understand your will for me and the fervor to carry out my good intentions. I offer my gifts of time, talent and possessions to you as a true act of faith,to reflect my love for you and my neighbor. Help me to reach out to others as you, my God, have reached out to me.
Amen

Roman Missal Frequently Asked Questions Why is there a need for a new translation? The Missale Romanum (Roman Missal), the ritual text for the
celebration of the Mass, was promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1970 as the definitive text of the reformed liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. That Latin text, the editio typica (typical edition), was translated into various languages for use around the world; the English edition was published in the United States in 1973. The Holy See issued a revised text, the editio typica altera, in 1975. Pope John Paul II promulgated the third edition (editio typica tertia) of the Missale Romanum during the Jubilee Year in 2000. Among other things, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. To aid the process of translation of the Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issued Liturgiam Authenticam, in 2001, an Instruction on the vernacular translation of the Roman Liturgy which outlines the principles and rules for translation. In 2007, the Congregation for Divine Worship issued the Ratio Translationis for the English Language, which outlined the specific rules for translation in English. Pre-Baptism Classes are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall
Immersion by Paul Turner Baptism in the Catholic Church may be administered either by immersion or pouring. The two options are always listed in that order, indicating a preference for baptism by immersion, even though pouring is more commonly practiced. Christian Initiation: General Introduction says, “As the rite for baptizing, either immersion, which is more suitable as a symbol of participation in the death and resurrection of Christ, or pouring may lawfully be used” (22). The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “Baptism is performed in the most expressive way by triple immersion in the baptismal water” (1239). The National Statutes for the Catechumenate approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1986 say, “Baptism by immersion is the fuller and more expressive sign of the sacrament and, therefore, is preferred. . . . Provision should be made for its more frequent use in the baptism of adults” (17).
For many centuries, Catholic churches were equipped with baptismal fonts suitable for pouring water three times over the head of an infant. Since the Second Vatican Council, many parishes have erected larger fonts for the immersion of infants and adults.
The documents never specify exactly how immersion takes place, but several practices have evolved. When immersing an infant, the minister gently lowers the
baby three times into a large bowl of blessed water. When immersing an adult, there are other options. Adults may kneel in a pool while the minister pours water three times over their heads. Or the minister may bring them face forward into the water three times. Or, if the pool is deep enough, while the adult stands, the minister may take him or her backwards into the pool three times.
Scheduled dates for Pre-Baptism Classes and the Sacrament of Baptism The next pre-baptism class will be Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall.

Ah! The good life: big house, nice car, fancy clothes, exotic vacations, swimming pools, motor homes, boats, and RV’s. We each have our own definition of what constitutes living well. But we as a culture and a community cannot escape the fact that we have far more than we need. Our rationalization is that we work hard for the money to buy this stuff. No doubt this is generally the truth. Then we have to work harder to have a place to put all that we have acquired. We have to build bigger barns like the man in Luke 12:13-21. Jesus calls the man a fool.
Our society strongly encourages consumerism. Any one who is over the age of 50 has witnessed the expansion of house sizes over the years. Most older people grew up in what would today be considered extremely small homes: around 1000 square feet. Usually the family had one car. There was one phone, one TV and one bathroom. Somehow, everyone survived. Are we really better off? Does having more stuff make you a happier person? How much stuff do you need to be happy? If owning things makes people happy, then Americans should be the happiest people on the planet.
Jesus does not condemn owning things. However, Jesus does condemn the idea that owning things will make us happy. One definition of happiness is wanting what you have. Who we are as a person is far more than what we have or own. We are children of God and everything on the planet is at our disposal. Will we be wise stewards of God’s creation or will we use far more of the earth’s resources than we need? This is a hard question that our society as a whole should be asking. This is a question we need to ask ourselves. Jesus tells us to be rich in what matters to God: love. We are to richly love our neighbor as ourselves. Perhaps one way to love your neighbor is to not participate in the American consumerism mentality. By encouraging each other to live more simply, we will be better able to help those less fortunate and save more of the earth’s resources for future generations.
Question of the week: What don’t the bishops understand about “illegal”? Why disrespect the rule of law?
Answer: The U.S. Bishops and the teachings of the Catholic Church have consistently respected the right of the sovereign to control its borders as well as the rule of civil law. However the church, along with other members of our democratic society, has the right to work to change the laws which are believed to violate basic human dignity - dignity imbued by the Creator.
In the case of immigration, the U.S. bishops believe that the broken U.S. immigration system contributes to the exploitation of migrant workers in the workplace, their abuse by ruthless smugglers and their deaths in the desert as they seek to find work to support their families. They come illegally because there are insufficient visas under the current system to come legally. Our system contains only 5,000 permanent visas for unskilled laborers to come to the United States, but the demand for their work is much higher, since as many as 300,000 undocumented people each year are absorbed into the U.S. workforce.
Comprehensive immigration reform, which the U.S. bishops support, would replace illegality with a system based on legal presence and legal entry, thus restoring the rule of law to a chaotic system while also protecting the basic dignity and lives of our fellow brothers and sisters. It would require those who have broken the law to get on the right side of it by paying a fine, taxes, learning English and waiting in back of a long line to have a chance to become a US citizen. This “path to
citizenship” is in the best interest of migrants, who are able to become full members of their communities and our nation, which will continue to benefit from their contributions without sacrificing our long-held values as a nation of immigrants: freedom, fairness and opportunity. (Quoted from Our Sunday Visitor.)
Point of View. Over the next few weeks I am going to continue to focus on the position of the Catholic Church on immigration reform. It is part of my written job description to educate the parish on social justice issues through the bulletin, and immigration reform is one such issue that deserves priority. While I recognize that this issue is political and controversial, my only objective is to present the Church’s point of view as outlined by the U.S. Bishops. There are no social justice issues which are not political, because of their very nature. As an added note, according to Women Religious, who have taken up the cause of Human Trafficking, the exploitation of migrant workers amounts to human trafficking.
