ST. VINCENT DE PAUL REFLECTION
Before disciples can be hosts to the poor and disadvantaged, they must humbly recognize themselves as those who have received a place of honor at God’s banquet table. Humility is recognizing that we are gifted, enriched, and nourished by God so that we can then reach out to others in the same way. (Living Liturgy, p.200)

The Church’s Oldest Prayer to Our Lady
O Mother of God, we take refuge in your loving care. Let not our plea to you pass unheeded in the trials that beset us, but deliver us from danger, for you alone are truly pure, you alone are truly blessed.

Stewards of Money: “In truth, all human beings are called to be saints, but that just means called to be fully human, to be perfect-that is, whole, mature, fulfilled. The saints are simply those men and women who relish the event of life as a gift and who realize that the only way to honor such a gift is to give it away.” William Stringfellow

This Week's Note from Fr. Dick

September 5, 2010

As I write this, it is raining and cool outside. It seems that summer is over. But I know that it is only the end of August. There is hope that summer will continue for a few more weeks and the sun will be out and it will be warmer. This is the same hope that the children in school this week gives me. These young people will be here for the next 9.5 months. They are receiving the tools to help them realize their
potential. They are being given the hope of a future full of promise. As they realize their gifts and talents and develop them, they will bloom into the people God has envisioned for them. We are all here to help them reach their potential. There will be rainy days along the journey. There will be days when it does not seem like summer. But they will realize that even in the dark dreary days of winter there is hope for sunshine and warmth.

It is true for all of us. We will have our rainy days and winter days. But there will be sunny days in abundance when everything goes right. So let us always have that hope that God has given us to rise above the dark and dreary and know the Son (of God) will shine brightly to take away the sadness, grief, frustration, anger, or anything else that may drag us down. God’s love will conquer all.

Fr. Dick

Dan Colgan: (After some feedback on this issue) though we would like to help Dan get his stuff back, it is his responsibility to pay for shipping. We did receive a $100 donation and we will ship what we can for that amount.

Family center: Repairs for water intrusion have started. Except for the exterior painting, the parish is not paying for these repairs.

FEATURED BUSINESS  Please support Burien Press 2 for 1 Drink Special (with bulletin coupon) at 423 SW 152nd Street. Burien.

Sunday Giving via credit cards, EFT and Online giving: The parish has taken steps to increase security of our parishioners’ credit card and EFT information which will exceed federal requirements. 93 families now use these methods for donating to the parish. By late spring, the parish will offer the option of giving online.

“Putting God First”: meets on Thursday in Unity Place, Unit 3, from 7:00-8:30pm. John Eisen and Butch Leonardson co-lead this program on meaning and implications of living our lives as stewards.

Roman Missal Changes in the People’s Parts
The words we use at Mass are changing but not the flow or parts of the Mass. Each week we will look at a part of the Mass which will be changing when the Roman Missal is implemented.

PART OF MASS
From the Introductory Rite: Penitential Act, Form B

PRESENT TEXT
Priest: Lord, we have sinned against you: Lord, have mercy.
People: Lord, have mercy.
Priest: Lord, show us your mercy and love.
People: And grant us your salvation.

NEW TEXT
Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
People: For we have sinned against you.
Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy.
People: And grant us your salvation.

A special Thank You to all who share their talents at St. Francis of Assisi Parish!

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults If you are interested in becoming Catholic, or completing your Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, contact Elizabeth in the Parish Office, extension 25 to get more information and to register for the classes. The RCIA process will begin its Inquiry period on September 13th and meets until Pentecost. Those going through RCIA will receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. The classes are on Monday
evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the Parish Hall.

Coming to RCIA means that you have chosen this particular place to continue your faith journey. No one is perfect; everyone has made mistakes along the way; this is why the Church exists. We join the Church because we desire to become better, not because we have it all figured out.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)

Baptisms are celebrated at our weekend Masses so that we can welcome our newly baptized members into the community of St. Francis.

Pre-Baptism Classes are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall

Immersion by Paul Turner  Baptism in the Catholic Church may be administered either by immersion or pouring. The two options are always listed in that order, indicating a preference for baptism by immersion, even though pouring is more commonly practiced. Christian Initiation: General Introduction says, “As the rite for baptizing, either immersion, which is more suitable as a symbol of participation in the death and resurrection of Christ, or pouring may lawfully be used” (22). The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “Baptism is performed in the most expressive way by triple immersion in the baptismal water” (1239). The National Statutes for the Catechumenate approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1986 say, “Baptism by immersion is the fuller and more expressive sign of the sacrament and, therefore, is preferred. . . . Provision should be made for its more frequent use in the baptism of adults” (17).

For many centuries, Catholic churches were equipped with baptismal fonts suitable for pouring water three times over the head of an infant. Since the Second Vatican Council, many parishes have erected larger fonts for the immersion of infants and adults.

The documents never specify exactly how immersion takes place, but several practices have evolved. When immersing an infant, the minister gently lowers the
baby three times into a large bowl of blessed water. When immersing an adult, there are other options. Adults may kneel in a pool while the minister pours water three times over their heads. Or the minister may bring them face forward into the water three times. Or, if the pool is deep enough, while the adult stands, the minister may take him or her backwards into the pool three times.

“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26. REALLY???? How can Jesus ask so much of us? Does Jesus really mean to hate our family and our own lives? The version in Matthew  is less severe. In Matthew 10:37, Jesus says, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Luke appears to be using a common rhetorical technique called hyperbole. The author states his case in such strong language that the point cannot be missed. Both Matthew and Luke are stressing that Jesus must come first in our lives, over and above absolutely everyone and everything else.

If we are not willing to put Jesus, God, first then we cannot be a true disciple. For people born into Christian families and living moral lives, losing family, friends or their lives because of the faith is relatively rare. However for people who do not live in a Christian environment, whether family, friends or society, choosing Jesus can mean great losses. Christians living in non-Christian cultures are
frequently persecuted and even martyred. Living as a Christian in modern day U.S. culture can be extremely difficult. Friends and family may need to become less influential. All of us, no matter what our circumstances, are advised to count the cost of discipleship.

True discipleship involves much more than lip service and rote participation in Church ritual. “The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it. Service of and witness to the faith is necessary for salvation: ‘So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.’” Being a disciple of Jesus requires courage! We can expect ridicule and disbelief when we put Jesus first in our lives. What cross are we willing to bear for the one who loved us enough to die for us?

Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 1816.

Social Ministry - Outreach

Frances Davis: Office Hours Monday - Thursday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM (206) 242-4575, ext 29,

francesd1938(_AT_)yahoo.com

From the desk of Frances Davis:

Down on the farm. Recent trips to areas just north and south, east and west of us brought to mind how close we live in proximity to rural areas. Some of us at St. Francis live in rural or semi-rural areas. What goes on in rural life needs to concern us all, because that is where our food source begins, as well as the care of the land that sustains us. As summer ends and the cooler days of the harvest season draw near, many parishes and dioceses celebrate rural life. For more information about our Stewardship of Creation visit the website of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference www.ncrlc.com “The earth is the Lord’s and all that it holds.” Psalm 24:1 On this website you can learn more about Catholic Rural Ethic, the Ethics of Eating and Spiritual resources.

Thinking about Creating a Rural Life Group? Visit the NCRLC website to get this notion rolling. You will be interested in their section about becoming a Green Ribbon church. You will find information about becoming a faith-based activist regarding the politics of food and ways to contact your representatives, both state and federal, about critical issues.

Do you usually “pass” when you hear about a walk-a-thon or settle for making pledge for someone else who is participating? I just heard about a walk-a-thon with something for everyone; individuals, families, youth, seniors and parish groups. I’m so intrigued, I’m going to bring my walker and do my very first walk-a-thon The St. Vincent de Paul “Friends of the Poor Walk” will take place at the
Kennedy High School track on Saturday, September 25 from 9am - noon. Hey folks, all you have to do is walk (or mosey) around the track as many or as few times as you like. You can bring strollers, walkers, and wheel chairs, or don your running/walking shoes and enjoy fun, music and friends. The oldest person signed up so far, Mr. Kobiashi. is in his 90’s. WE CAN DO THIS! You can walk a mile or more - or a mile or less (in my case, much, much less) - while raising money for St. Vincent de Paul to help prevent evictions, hunger, utility shut-offs and more. You can be a donor or a walker, or a donor and a walker or a donor with a walker. As an added bonus, sportscaster Tony Ventrella will be joining us in making a difference. Registration forms are in the parish office and were in the 8/29 bulletin.

I enjoy interfaith dialogue with a close Muslim friend. Ramadan, the Islamic period of fasting and the most sacred season of the year for the Islamic religion, began August 11th and will end September 10th or 11th with great celebration. Like our Easter, Ramadan does not occur at the same time every year. Ramadan occurs in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar year. The beginning and end is somewhat unpredictable. It depends on the sighting of the moon, and can vary from area to area. It is likely this year that the end of Ramadan will be celebrated in some areas on September 11th. Muslim celebrations of the end of Ramadan on September 11th is bound to be mis-understood by many around the world and especially in the United States. Be well informed and realize that the significance of the celebration has nothing to do with the tragedy of 9/11.

Adult Volleyball on Sundays

Every Sunday night from 7 to 9 PM, Adults from all over the area and of all skill levels gather together for two hours of good exercise. You don't need to be a parishiner to play and have some fun. We play at St. Francis's McClean Family Center.
